Zazenkai : A Day of Meditation & Circling Exploration

  • The Integral Center 2805 Broadway Boulder, CO, 80304 United States (map)
At the end of the day, there is no lower left relational meditation practice, really, without an upper right, individual meditation practice. And while a relational practice has been hugely beneficial for hardcore meditators, those of us who are relational people and want to learn to serve people even more deeply...for us an individual meditation practice can accelerate how we serve others so potently, many have been shocked by the results. My entire career in meditation and relational process was on the foundation of very intense sitting. Happy sitting, Intimacy junkies!
— Decker Cunov

You’re invited to join Rev. Bu Nan Daiko for a Zazenkai in the Hollow Bones Rinzai Zen tradition. A Zazenkai is a day of meditation where we take this precious opportunity to dehook from the busyness of our lives, and to truly focus and develop a direct relationship with the nature of our minds. Through concentration and insight, we can come to see so much about what drives us in the world, what our motivations are, and what blocks us from living the life we want to live. Through this practice, we can touch in with our deepest awareness, which is the source of our true authenticity and compassion. How can we truly be with others, unless we truly know who we are? This day is open to new meditators, long-term practitioners, Circlers, and non-Circlers.

I am offering this opportunity to practice before T3 so that T3 participants have a chance to truly check in with themselves, and cultivate deep presence, before these weekends start. Circling is a practice that is predicated on the basis that if we are truly coming from a space of curious, non-judgemental, deeply present, open awareness, we can authentically, and simply, just be with someone, right where they are. Circling, ideally, comes from the type of awareness that true meditation naturally cultivates. We refer to Circling as a practice of Intersubjective meditation. If you want to deepen your skills in this practice, you must deepen the ways in which you know yourself, and how you relate to your mind.

We will be offering these Zazenkai’s on the Thursday before T3 starts. There will be a full day of sitting that will go from 9am to 5 pm, followed by 3 hours of Circling. You may join for either the first half of the Zazenkai, or the second half of the Zazenkai, or both. I do ask that you attend at least half of the Zazenkai if you plan to attend the Circling afterwards.

After the dinner break, at 6 pm, we will begin an exploration of Intersubjective Meditation which will entail an exploration of Circling, attentional awareness practices, theoretical overviews, and relational practices, all aimed at increasing the skill involved in Circling. If you want to take part in the Intersubjective Meditation exploration, I do ask that you take part in at least the last half of the Zazenkai, unless we connect and reach prior agreements. If there is enough interest, I will also hold space for meditation on Friday morning from 8 am to 12 pm.

Please RSVP for the event so I know how many cushions to put out...
